Honeycomb

Honeycomb is a production observability platform for software teams running distributed systems.

Its core job is not "AI" in the generic pitch-deck sense. It helps engineers inspect what is happening inside live systems using high-cardinality telemetry, especially distributed traces, so they can debug incidents, understand user-impacting behavior, and investigate messy, non-deterministic workflows.

The website also makes clear Honeycomb is positioning for AI-heavy stacks: humans and AI agents share the same telemetry view, and the product is meant to help diagnose modern systems where workflows are less predictable than classic request-response apps.

In plain English: this is serious engineering infrastructure for production debugging and observability, not a thin AI wrapper.

Assessment

Honeycomb is not directly getting killed by Claude today.

Anthropic is clearly building more operational tooling around Claude usage, including metrics dashboards and OpenTelemetry hooks. That creates adjacent pressure, especially for teams that only need to monitor Claude-powered agents and are happy with vendor-native telemetry.

But Honeycomb's real business is broader and deeper than "show me LLM logs." It covers arbitrary production systems, distributed traces, high-cardinality exploration, and cross-service debugging. Anthropic would need to become a full observability vendor—not just an AI platform with telemetry—to seriously replace it.

So: not safe, not cooked. Vendor-native AI observability is nibbling at the edge, not eating the whole platform.

Biggest historical hit

The most relevant hit is Anthropic's API bridge between Claude's default metrics dashboard and full OpenTelemetry integration.

That matters because Honeycomb lives right on top of telemetry ingestion and analysis. When Anthropic gives customers easier access to metrics plus OTel plumbing, it reduces the need for separate tooling for Claude-specific monitoring use cases.

It is not a full Honeycomb replacement.
But it is the cleanest evidence that Anthropic is moving from model provider toward first-party operational visibility.

What still protects them

Honeycomb still has real protection if its product is as strong as claimed.

  • Horizontal scope: it observes entire production systems, not just Claude.
  • Deep tracing DNA: distributed tracing and high-cardinality debugging are hard, infrastructure-heavy problems.
  • OpenTelemetry roots: being embedded in open standards makes it easier to sit across mixed stacks and model vendors.
  • Enterprise adoption: named customers and production trust matter here; observability is sticky once installed.
  • No-preaggregation / no-cardinality-limits positioning: if true in practice, that is a meaningful technical differentiator for complex debugging.

The risk is narrower but real: if a growing share of incident investigation moves inside vendor-native AI consoles, Honeycomb can get pushed down from primary interface to plumbing layer. That's margin pressure, not extinction.

Why this is in the blast radius

The API bridges the gap between our default metrics dashboard available in the Console and the full OpenTelemetry integration, giving you an easier way to access key metrics without complex setup.

Inside blast radius

This is the clearest direct overlap.

Honeycomb sells observability infrastructure, and Anthropic is explicitly offering first-party metrics plus OpenTelemetry connectivity for Claude workloads. That chips away at the need for a third-party tool when the customer's main question is simply how Claude systems are performing.

Still, it is limited to Claude-centric telemetry, not full-stack observability across arbitrary distributed systems.

Claude Cowork is now generally available to all paid plans. For Enterprise, we are adding role-based access controls, group spend limits, usage analytics, and expanded OpenTelemetry to give admins what they need to deploy it across the org.

Inside blast radius

Usage analytics plus expanded OpenTelemetry is exactly the kind of operational surface area that starts to overlap with observability workflows.

For enterprises rolling out Claude internally, Anthropic is bundling governance and telemetry features inside the native product. That reduces the need for separate tooling for Claude adoption monitoring.

But again, this looks like product analytics and admin visibility for Claude, not the broad debugging depth Honeycomb provides for production systems.

Build and deploy agents at scale with Claude Managed Agents, or use features like the advisor strategy, code execution, web search, and more. Anthropic operates the service, and all new features ship the same day they go live on the native Claude API.

Inside blast radius

Honeycomb explicitly markets observability for AI agents operating alongside humans.

When Anthropic offers managed agents as a native service, customers may prefer Anthropic's built-in monitoring and controls instead of assembling separate agent telemetry stacks. That creates pressure around the AI-agent-specific part of Honeycomb's story.

It does not replace Honeycomb's broader role monitoring the surrounding application and infrastructure estate.

Outside blast radius

This expands Claude's ability to operate software and complete multi-step tasks in live applications.

That may indirectly increase demand for tools like Honeycomb because more autonomous workflows usually create more debugging complexity. But the announcement is about agent action capability, not observability or telemetry.

So the blast radius is indirect, not substitutive.

Outside blast radius

Better coding, longer-running task execution, and stronger verification make Claude more useful for engineers and operators.

That could help users analyze incidents or write debugging code faster, but it does not itself provide the telemetry substrate, trace storage, or investigative UX Honeycomb sells.

Useful adjacent capability; weak direct replacement signal.
